Retro struggles amid competition from Hit 3 and Raid 2

is currently feeling the heat as the other two continue their strong run at the box office.

Suriya’s Retro, a stylized action drama set in the 80s, had a huge start, earning Rs 19.25 crore on its opening day. The film performed best in Tamil Nadu, with the Tamil version contributing Rs 17.25 crore. However, it witnessed a sharp dip of 59.74% on Friday, collecting Rs 7.75 crore, and held steady at the same number on Saturday, as per early estimates. With a three-day total of Rs 34.75 crore, Retro has underwhelmed in comparison to the other two releases.

Nani’s Hit 3 has turned out to be a dark horse at the box office. Riding on strong word-of-mouth and the success of its predecessors, the thriller raked in Rs 21 crore on Thursday, followed by consistent collections over the next two days. The film’s total currently stands at Rs 41.25 crore in three days, surpassing Retro despite releasing on the same day.
Meanwhile, Ajay Devgn’s Raid 2, the sequel to his 2018 blockbuster, continues its winning streak. The film, bolstered by positive audience feedback and Devgn’s mass appeal, has amassed approximately Rs 49.25 crore in just three days, making it the front-runner among the weekend releases.
Trade points out that while Retro has a niche appeal and has performed well in Tamil Nadu, it’s losing ground in other territories due to stiff competition and lack of connect with the masses.
