India vs England Live Score, 3rd Test Day 1: Shubman Gill-led India will take on Ben Stokes' England in the third Test of the ongoing Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy at the iconic Lord's.

The series is currently levelled at 1-1. England won the first Test at Headingley by five wickets, chasing 371 runs on the final day. India bounced back in style at Edgbaston, hammering a hapless England by 337 runs.

England have made one change to their playing XI, bringing in speedster Jofra Archer, who is making his comeback to Test cricket after a four-year gap. Meanwhile, India welcome back their World No. 1 fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah, who missed the second Test due to workload management.

The pitch at Lord's is expected to be a green top. After the loss at Edgbaston, England coach Brendon McCullum and captain Ben Stokes had attributed their defeat to a surface they described as "subcontinent-like," suggesting it favoured the Indian pacers. But on a livelier Lord's wicket — and with Bumrah back — India's pace attack could be just as lethal.

Playing XIs

India (Predicted) XI: Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Karun Nair, Shubman Gill (c), Rishabh Pant (wk), Nitish Kumar Reddy, Ravindra Jadeja, Washington Sundar, Akash Deep, Mohammed Siraj, Jasprit Bumrah

England XI: Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Ben Stokes (c), Jamie Smith (wk), Chris Woakes, Brydon Carse, Jofra Archer, Shoaib Bashir.

3rd Test Match Day 1: Can Shubman break Bradman's record?

Shubman Gill is on the verge of surpassing an 88-year-old record held by Don Bradman for the most runs scored by a captain in a single Test series. Bradman accumulated 810 runs in five matches during the 1936–37 Ashes, averaging 90 with three centuries. Gill is currently 225 runs short of that milestone.

Interestingly, Bradman set that record in his first series as Test captain—meaning if Gill crosses the 810-run mark, he’ll also claim the record for the most runs in a debut series as captain. Bradman’s highest score in that series was 270, while Gill has already notched up 269 in this series in England.

Additionally, Gill is closing in on the Indian record for most runs in a Test series by a captain. That mark belongs to Sunil Gavaskar, who scored 732 runs across six Tests against the West Indies in 1978–79. Gill needs just 148 more runs to eclipse Gavaskar’s tally.

India vs England Live Score, 3rd Test Day 1: Does Bumrah have support?

Mitchell Starc, set to play his 100th Test in Jamaica next week, has shouldered a significant workload. The left-arm pacer has bowled 618.1 overs for Australia, and during his IPL stints with Kolkata Knight Riders (2024) and Delhi Capitals (2025), he added another 77.5 overs—bringing his total to a taxing 696 overs of high-intensity pace bowling.

Mohammed Siraj has also been heavily burdened. Since Jasprit Bumrah's return in August 2023, Siraj has delivered 579.5 overs across 45 matches in Tests, ODIs, and T20Is. Add to that 111 overs in the IPL across two seasons for Royal Challengers Bangalore (2024) and Gujarat Titans (2025), and his tally climbs to an immense 680.5 overs—all with barely any time spent at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru for recovery or rehab.

A look at the scorecards from the 19 Tests India have played since August 2023 reveals that the fast bowlers have collectively bowled 1186.3 overs. Astonishingly, Bumrah and Siraj alone have delivered 848.2 of those overs—accounting for a whopping 71.49% of the total pace workload.

3rd Test Match Day 1: Is Bumrah vs Kail comparison fair?

During commentary, former India legend Sunil Gavaskar took a dig at modern workload management practices, suggesting today’s players spend more time in the gym than actually honing their craft. Using Kapil Dev as an example, Gavaskar recalled how the iconic all-rounder would bowl extensively in the nets—sometimes to six or seven batters—then bat, and bowl again. “He did what his job demanded: bowl, bowl, and bowl,” Gavaskar said, crediting Kapil's bowling fitness to repeated match-simulated practice.

However, it's important to note that Kapil Dev benefited from a long off-season—typically from May to September—something modern cricketers no longer enjoy. With cricket now played almost year-round, today’s players are constantly engaged—if not with international fixtures, then with lucrative T20 leagues. The IPL, for instance, runs nearly 10 weeks, and while bowlers may only deliver four overs a match, the physical toll of tight schedules, late-night games, and continuous travel is considerable and often underestimated.

IND vs ENG Live Score: How much Bumrah has bowled since his return

Since Jasprit Bumrah came back into international cricket after an 11-month layoff following back surgery on August 18, 2023, he has bowled 37.4 overs for India in T20Is, 437.2 overs in Tests, and 128.5 overs in ODIs. Add his IPL workload, and it comes to 99.1 overs in the 2024 and 2025 editions of the T20 league. He has bowled 703 overs.

3rd Test Match Day 1: Weather update

Losing overs to rain during the five days of the Test would be unexpected, as the weather in London is forecast to remain warm and sunny throughout the match.

IND vs ENG Live Score: Pitch Report

After flat pitches at Headingley and Edgbaston, a green-top surface is anticipated at Lord's. Reports suggest that England specifically requested a pitch with more grass to benefit their fast bowlers. As a result, handling the new ball will be especially important.

"There is little green in the wicket. It's more than what we saw in the last two matches. But tomorrow, when they will make the final cut, the last cutting they do the day before the match, after that we can talk. And generally, the Lord's... The scores of the first and second innings are comparatively low. So, we can expect that it will be helpful for bowlers," India batting coach Sitanshu Kotak said at the press conference.

India vs England Live Score: Green top awaits India

The pitch at Lord's is expected to be a green top. After the loss at Edgbaston, England coach Brendon McCullum and captain Ben Stokes had attributed their defeat to a surface they described as "subcontinent-like," suggesting it favoured the Indian pacers. But on a livelier Lord's wicket — and with Bumrah back — India's pace attack could be just as lethal.

IND vs ENG Live Score: England playing XI

Jofra Archer will make a comeback into England's Test team after a gap of four years at Lord's on Thursday. England have announced their playing XI for the third Test match. Archer will replace Joshua Tongue in the XI. After playing one first-class match for Sussex, where he bowled 18 overs, Archer was included in England's Test team. Archer took 42 wickets at an average of 31.04 in the 13 Tests he played between 2019 and 2021, before persistent elbow and back injuries kept him out of action for 18 months. Former captain Michael Vaughan has warned England not to expect too much from Jofra Archer.

India vs England Live Score: Follow TOI

Ahead of the Lord’s Test, India’s support staff assessed the green-tinged pitch, with Jasprit Bumrah likening it to subcontinental surfaces. The iconic venue’s slope presents unique challenges, especially for those who will be batting at this iconic cricket ground for the first-time. Batting coach Sitanshu Kotak emphasized minor adjustments and a strong mindset to counter natural variations. How India’s batters adapt could shape the direction of the series.
