Jasprit Bumrah vs Jofra Archer at Lord’s adds fire to India-England Test clash

Jasprit Bumrah and Jofra Archer

The highly anticipated third Test between India and England at Lord’s has gained even more buzz with the expected return of Jasprit Bumrah and Jofra Archer. Both fast bowlers, considered among the best of their generation, are set to light up the field over the next few days, adding a fiery edge to an already gripping series. In a format increasingly driven by aggressive batting to keep fans interested, bowlers like Bumrah and Archer still generate a different kind of thrill. Their careers, while unique in style, have followed a similar path — interrupted by frequent injuries, with both teams investing significant effort into managing their fitness for marquee events.

It wasn’t surprising, then, that Bumrah skipped India’s training session on the eve of the match.

Archer, who bowled at full tilt in the Edgbaston nets, didn’t bowl on Wednesday. He had a batting session and then wrapped up early. “It’s obvious whenever he (Archer) gets the ball in his hand, there is a change in the game. The opposition feels it because they know what he can do in a spell. I think it’s great for English fans,” said England captain Ben Stokes.

India’s vice-captain Rishabh Pant was just as direct when asked about Bumrah. “Everything,” he replied with a smile.

Archer last played a Test in February 2021 in Ahmedabad. Bumrah returned to international cricket earlier in the series under a workload management plan that limits him to three out of five Tests.

Who do you think will have a bigger impact in the third Test at Lord's?

Both have tweaked their actions to ease physical strain. Archer has shifted from a side-on to a more open-chested action, improving his ability to bring the ball back into right-handers. Bumrah, meanwhile, has added a few jogging strides to his approach, making his run-up smoother and potentially reducing the load on delivery. The two teams’ handling of their strike weapons differs. India manages Bumrah’s overs and chooses matches based on importance and venue. England, on the other hand, are ready to back Archer fully. “If we didn’t think he was ready, we wouldn’t have picked him. We believe he’s done enough to get through a Test match,” said Stokes. “Whenever you walk out onto the field, you’re always putting yourself at risk. It’s professional sport.” With both speedsters likely to feature, fans can expect a thrilling contest at the Home of Cricket.
