NEW DELHI: New details have emerged surrounding the unfortunate and untimely death of actor Matthew Perry, who tragically lost his life in an apparent
drowning
at his California residence on Saturday, reported the New York Post.
According to The Post, officials received a phone call, confirming that the late actor was found in his hot tub, unresponsive and not breathing. Responding promptly to the emergency, the
Los Angeles Fire Department
(LAFD) arrived at the scene at 4:07 p.m., followed by the Los Angeles Police Department at 4:10 p.m.
While authorities have not disclosed the identity of the caller, TMZ has reported that it was
Matthew
Perry's assistant who made the call. The assistant returned to Perry's residence after being sent out on an errand by the actor, only to make the harrowing discovery.
“An adult male patient was deceased prior to first response arrival. The patient was found by a bystander who had re-positioned the victim where the head was out of water,” the LAFD said in a statement obtained by the New York Post.
“Firefighters pulled the victim out of the jacuzzi and did a quick medical assessment to find he was deceased,” it further said.
Earlier The Post had reported that Perry’s parents, Suzanne and John Bennett Perry, and his stepdad, “Dateline’s” Keith Morrison, were "later photographed appearing distraught outside the home, and the late star’s body was removed from the residence that night".
Meanwhile, an
autopsy
has been completed and a
cause of death
was “deferred.”
Following the autopsy, a coroner has ordered more tests, including toxicology, the result of which can take months
LAPD Capt. Scot Williams, who leads the Robbery Homicide Division, told the New York Post on Sunday that the “cause of death may not be known for some time, but at this point, foul play is not suspected.”
Matthew Perry's most iconic role was as Chandler Bing on the popular sitcom "Friends" for a decade. His remarkable performance on the show not only defined his career but also catapulted the careers of his co-stars, including Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, and David Schwimmer.
His castmates broke their silence on his demise on Monday.
“We are all so utterly devastated by the loss of Matthew. We were more than just cast mates. We are a family,” read their statement, obtained by People.
“There is so much to say, but right now we’re going to take a moment to grieve and process this unfathomable loss. In time we will say more, as and when we are able. For now, our thoughts and our love are with Matty’s family, his friends, and everyone who loved him around the world,” the statement further read.
