 ‘Better than useless trophies’

Kangana Ranaut’s latest political drama Emergency may not have made waves at the box office, but the actress-turned-politician claims the film is still striking a chord with some audiences. Taking to her Instagram stories recently, Kangana shared that she received a Kanjeevaram silk saree as a token of appreciation for her work in the film.
‘Better than useless trophies’
Calling it “so wonderful,” Kangana wrote, “I got a stunning weave sari for making #Emergency… so much better than getting useless trophies.” The remark was clearly a jab at mainstream Bollywood award shows, with the actress once again reinforcing her long-standing criticism of the industry’s award culture.

Released on January 17, Emergency features Kangana in the role of former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Not only did she headline the film, but she also directed it. The movie dives into the turbulent 21-month Emergency period imposed by Gandhi between 1975 and 1977, often regarded as one of the darkest phases in Indian democracy.
A quiet compliment for Emergency
Despite receiving mixed reviews and a lukewarm response commercially, Emergency has continued to find appreciation in certain circles. Kangana also posted a photo of a handwritten note she claimed came from someone in the political opposition. “Hey, saw Emergency yesterday you are tooooo good! Love,” the note read. Kangana responded with, “A little note of appreciation from the other side quietly came to me… and made me smile warmly #emergency #parliamentday.”

While box office numbers haven’t favored Emergency, Kangana seems content with the acknowledgments she’s receiving beyond the spotlight and stage.
