Daniel Andreas San Diego
, a fugitive wanted by the FBI for over 20 years in connection with two
bombings in California
, has been arrested in Wales.
San Diego, 46, was captured at a property near woodland in
Conwy
on Monday by the
National Crime Agency
with support from
counter-terrorism
officers and
North Wales Police
.
Extradition
proceedings have begun, with San Diego appearing at Westminster Magistrates Court on Tuesday.
The FBI has alleged that San Diego was involved in two bombings linked to
animal rights extremism
in 2003.
On 28 August that year, two bombs exploded on the campus of Chiron Corp, a biotechnology firm in Emeryville, California, and a month later, on 26 September, a nail-strapped bomb exploded at Shaklee Corp., a nutritional company in Pleasanton.
As per the New York Post, both companies were reportedly targeted due to their connections with a laboratory conducting animal experiments.
San Diego’s arrest marks a significant breakthrough in a decades-long manhunt.
FBI Director Christopher Wray said, “Daniel San Diego’s arrest after more than 20 years as a fugitive for two bombings in the San Francisco area shows that no matter how long it takes, the FBI will find you and hold you accountable.”
Wray added further and said, “There’s a right way and a wrong way to express your views in our country, and turning to violence and destruction of property is not the right way”.
San Diego, who was added to the FBI’s Most Wanted Terrorists list in 2009, has been described as having ties to animal rights extremist groups.
Known for his
vegan lifestyle
, expertise in computer networking, and proficiency with the Linux operating system, he reportedly travelled internationally. He possessed a tattoo of burning hillsides with the phrase “it only takes a spark” on his chest, reported The Guardian.
The FBI had offered a $250,000 reward for information leading to San Diego’s capture.
