As per Hindu holy scriptures, donating during Pitru Paksha Shradh is considered a noble act as it invites the blessings of one’s ancestors.

Auspicious items donated during the 15-day period of Shrad is said to benefit one's relatives living in another world.

However, donating certain items is prohibited during Pitru Paksha Shrad. Here we list them down for you.

Iron kitchenware and utensils

It is advised not to donate ironware. Instead prefer cookware of brass, gold, or silver.

Leather items

It is inauspicious made of animal skin or skin of any living creature.

Old clothes

Old clothes are not considered worthy of donation during Pitru Paksha Shradh. Instead, one should opt for donating new clothes to the needy or a Brahmin.

Black clothes

The colour black is generally considered inauspicious and hence should be avoided in Hindu poojas and rituals. So, one should refrain from donating black-coloured clothes or blankets too for Pitru Paksha Shradh.

Any oil, especially mustard oil, should not be donated for Pitru Paksha Shradh.

Leftover food

Only pure and freshly cooked food should to be donated for Pitru Paksha Shradh. Never donate food that has been eaten or is stale.
