Sandeep Reddy Vanga's action film, Animal, starring Ranbir Kapoor in the lead, was subject to brutal scrutiny, over its theme, violence, and accusations of perpetrating patriarchy. Despite that, the movie, co-starring Rashmika Mandanna did roaring business at the BO, and became one of the biggest hits of last year.
Earlier, producer and director Sandeep's brother, Pranay Reddy Vanga, expressed the team's delight over the film's triumph, acknowledging the potential for even greater success if the movie had been shorter in duration.
Pranay, while talking to Pinkvilla earlier this year, revealed that prior to the film's release, lead actor Ranbir Kapoor initiated a discussion, prompting co-stars to predict the box office performance. Anil Kapoor forecasted a collection of Rs 350 crore, expressing contentment with Rs 400 crore, while Rashmika suggested Rs 300 crore. Bhushan Kumar chose to remain silent. When asked, Sandeep ambitiously stated that, considering the three years of dedicated effort, he would not settle for anything less than Rs 500 crore. The film surpassed this target, leaving everyone involved in celebration.
Highlighting the film's noteworthy achievement, Pranay emphasized that Animal, with a runtime of three and a half hours and an 'A' rating, crossed the Rs 500 crore mark in India and Rs 850 crore globally. He acknowledged the challenges, including the movie's lengthy duration, adult rating, release on a non-long weekend, and sharing screens with Sam Bahadur. Despite these obstacles, the film achieved remarkable success, pulling in Rs 850 crore.
Originally spanning 3 hours and 30 minutes, excluding the interval and introduction, Animal underwent a trim of 8-9 minutes under pressure, a decision regretted by Sandeep later. Pranay emphasized that their goal was never just about big numbers but rather about creating a quality film.
