Packaged snacks, sugary drinks ,and fast food may be convenient, but they’re often high in salt, sugar, and unhealthy fats. Multiple studies have found that ultra-processed foods are linked to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, mental health disorders, diabetes, obesity, sleep problems, and even premature death. In the US, almost 60% of the calories come from ultra-processed foods. Changes are afoot as Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services, is determined to fix the broken food system, which includes taking away ultra-processed foods, a major contributor to the ‘obesity epidemic’ in America.
