Ranji Trophy Live Score: Karnataka vs Punjab
After bowling put Punjab for a paltry 55, Karnataka are 199/4 with a lead of 144 runs. R Smaran is unbeaten at 83 with Abhinav Manohar (1*) at the other end.
Ranji Trophy Live Score: Mumbai vs Jammu and Kashmir
J&K are 174/7 at the moment. They are leading by 54 runs. The last three batters will aim to put as many runs on the board. Mumbai need three quick wickets to wrap up J&K innings.
Things seem to be going from bad to worse for Rohit Sharma, whose poor form must be of serious concern to the Ajit-Agarkar-headed national selection committee, which has named him India's captain for the home ODI series against England and the Champions Trophy next month.
Rohit's return to the Ranji Trophy after nearly a decade lasted barely for half an hour as he was dismissed after mistiming a pull off Jammu & Kashmir pacer Umar Nazir at the Mumbai Cricket Association's Sharad Pawar Academy in BKC, after managing to score only three runs off 19 balls on the morning of Day One.
It was another poor outing for the out-of-form 37-year-old whose desperate search to rediscover his form must now await the second innings.
After scratching around, during which the impressive Nazir repeatedly beat him and even struck him on the glove once on a pitch where the ball was moving around, India's ODI & Test captain perished to a horrible shot in the sixth over.
Attempting a pull off a harmless, slightly short ball pitched outside the off-stump, he only managed a leading edge that J&K captain Paras Dogra easily caught at mid-off.
This is third time this season that Rohit has been dismissed in this fashion. New Zealand fast bowler Matt Henry (at the Wankhede in Mumbai) and Pat Cummins (at the MCG in Melbourne) have dismissed the ageing star in a similar fashion.
To accommodate Rohit and the other India stars for this match, Mumbai had to drop their season's success story, opener Ayush Mhatre (408 runs in 5 matches, with two centuries in his debut Ranji season).
Rohit has been in the midst of a horror run with the bat, spread across the home Test series against New Zealand, and the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia.
Ranji Trophy Live Score: 'Didn't celebrate Rohit's wicket'
It was a "prized wicket" for Umar Nazir Mir, but the Jammu and Kashmir pacer admitted he couldn’t bring himself to celebrate after dismissing Rohit Sharma, his cricketing idol, during their Ranji Trophy clash against defending champions Mumbai on Thursday. The 31-year-old produced an impressive spell, claiming 4/41 on the opening day of the Group A match at the BKC Ground, with Rohit among his notable victims.
Using the moisture on the fresh wicket to his advantage, Nazir rattled Mumbai’s batting lineup, removing key players Ajinkya Rahane (12), Shivam Dube (0), and Hardik Tamore (7), along with the India captain, whose struggles with form persisted in his first Ranji appearance in a decade.
"A good ball is a good ball against any player, you don't look at the stature of the player, but Rohit Sharma's wicket is a big one, I am happy," Nazir told the media at the end of play.
"The first thought in my mind was...I did not celebrate, as a fan of Rohit Sharma. I know he is something, even though I dismissed him. I am a big fan of Rohit Sharma.
"(Even) if we win this game, it would be a proud moment because India's captain is playing in the opposition," added Nazir, recalling his role in J&K’s historic win over a star-studded Mumbai side at the Wankhede Stadium a decade ago.
Nazir explained that a combination of lateral movement and hitting a spot just ahead of a good length proved effective on the first day. That approach not only generated extra bounce but also resulted in Rohit’s dismissal after a brief stay of 3 runs off 19 balls.
Ranji Trophy Live Score: Jadeja takes five
The sixth round of the 2024/25 Ranji Trophy season kicked off on Thursday with significant attention on Indian Test players featuring for their state teams. In line with the BCCI’s mandate requiring international cricketers to participate in domestic matches, Ravindra Jadeja marked his return to the Ranji Trophy with an impactful all-round performance for Saurashtra against Delhi in Rajkot.
Jadeja was the standout performer on Day One, claiming a superb five-wicket haul (5-66) to help bowl Delhi out for 188. His scalps included key players like Yash Dhull, Ayush Badoni, Navdeep Saini, Harsh Tyagi, and Sanat Sangwan, showcasing his class and control with the ball.
Delhi’s innings featured the much-anticipated appearance of Rishabh Pant, but the wicketkeeper-batter managed just 1 off 10 balls. Attempting a sweep against off-spinner Dharmendrasinh Jadeja, Pant was caught at deep square leg, further compounding Delhi’s batting struggles.
In response, Jadeja continued to shine, contributing 38 off 36 balls during Saurashtra’s innings. Coming in at number five, he struck two fours and three sixes in a brisk knock before being dismissed by Shivam Sharma. By stumps, Saurashtra had reached 163/5, trailing Delhi by 25 runs, with the match finely poised heading into Day Two.
Ranji Trophy Live Score: Disappointing return for Rohit and Yashasvi
Rohit Sharma’s eagerly awaited return to the Ranji Trophy ended in disappointment as the Mumbai skipper was dismissed for just 3 runs off 19 balls in their Group A clash against Jammu and Kashmir at the Sharad Pawar Academy on Thursday.
Under the spotlight for his poor form, the Indian Test and ODI captain attracted attention after committing to play in the Ranji Trophy during last week’s Champions Trophy squad announcement.
Opening the innings with Yashasvi Jaiswal following Mumbai captain Ajinkya Rahane’s decision to bat first, Rohit appeared composed during the pre-match routine but struggled to settle at the crease. J&K pacer Umar Nazir Mir bowled with precision, tying Rohit down with two successive maidens. Rohit’s only scoring shots included a single through the on-side and a couple of runs from a drive before he fell on Mir’s 17th delivery. A length ball outside off-stump moved away slightly, eliciting a leading edge that was comfortably taken by Paras Dogra at extra cover.
Rohit’s dismissal extended his worrying slump in red-ball cricket. He concluded the 2024-25 Test season with an average of 10.93, managing just one half-century in 15 innings. His current first-class season numbers are equally grim, with an average of 10.43 in 16 innings — the second-lowest since 2006 for batters who’ve played at least 15 innings in the top six.
Yashasvi Jaiswal also struggled to get going. The left-hander faced a probing spell from Auqib Nabi, who exploited the helpful morning conditions. Nabi eventually trapped Jaiswal lbw for 4 with a delivery that jagged back sharply, beating his inside edge and striking him deep in the crease. The umpire had no hesitation in raising his finger.
Mumbai made tactical adjustments to include Rohit and Jaiswal, leaving out Ayush Mhatre, who has been a standout performer in his debut season with 408 runs at an average of 45.33. However, on a cool Mumbai morning, J&K’s disciplined bowling made the most of the favorable conditions, exposing the vulnerability of Mumbai’s top order.
Mumbai vs Jammu and Kashmir Live Score: Pant and Gill
In Rajkot, Rishabh Pant made his first first-class appearance for Delhi since the 2017-18 season, but his stay at the crease was brief. The flamboyant southpaw managed just 1 off 10 balls before falling to veteran Saurashtra left-arm spinner Dharmendrasingh Jadeja. Incidentally, India all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja was also part of the Saurashtra playing XI.
Meanwhile, in Bengaluru, Shubman Gill could not make an impact for Punjab against Karnataka. The young opener was dismissed for 4, caught behind off pacer Abhilash Shetty in the fourth over of the innings.
The BCCI’s directive requiring contracted players to participate in domestic cricket seems to have prompted the Indian stars’ Ranji Trophy appearances. However, their lackluster performances come in the wake of the team’s disappointing series loss in Australia.
Mumbai vs Jammu and Kashmir Live Score: Hello and welcome!
Hello and welcome to the Live coverage of Day 2 coverage of Ranji Trophy matches.
he much-anticipated return of India’s cricket stars to the Ranji Trophy ended on a disappointing note as Rohit Sharma, Rishabh Pant, and Shubman Gill failed to make an impact in the penultimate round of the premier red-ball competition on Thursday.
Rohit, fresh from a forgettable series in Australia, marked his return to domestic cricket after a decade, aiming to regain form ahead of the Champions Trophy. However, his comeback for Mumbai against Jammu and Kashmir was short-lived. Attempting his signature pull shot off Umar Nazir, Rohit (3) ended up miscuing the ball, offering a catch to J&K skipper Paras Dogra at mid-off.
His opening partner, Yashasvi Jaiswal, also fell cheaply, scoring just 4. The young left-hander was trapped leg-before by Auqib Nabi, who exploited the fresh pitch at the BKC Ground with sharp movement off the surface.
Another Champions Trophy-bound player, Shreyas Iyer, failed to make an impression, departing for 11 after mistiming a shot to mid-on off Yudhvir Singh’s bowling.
Despite the presence of India’s cricketing stars, the turnout at the stadium remained low. Even the fans watching from nearby office buildings lost interest and returned to work soon after the 37-year-old Rohit was dismissed.
