India now have a new vice-captain in the Cricket World Cup 2023 after KL Rahul was given the duty as a replacement for Hardik Pandya who has been ruled out of the rest of the tournament. Pandya will be missing the remainder of the World Cup due to the ankle injury he suffered in the Bangladesh game on 19 October.

Pandya was expected to make a return to the squad and was working towards full fitness at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru but he is unable to do so and India have replaced him with pacer Prasidh Krishna in the 15-member squad, ICC confirmed on Saturday. This also means India were in need of a new vice-captain and the team management has opted for Rahul to be the man now, as per the Indian Express.

The newspaper also stated that Jasprit Bumrah was also in contention for the role but Rahul’s role as a wicket-keeper, who has a better view of proceedings, worked in the favour of the Karnataka player. Rahul will now be required to be part of all team meetings and can have a say in picking the playing XI.

Team India, who have won all seven matches so far, are the first team to qualify for the semi-finals in World Cup 2023 and return to action on Sunday against South Africa. The match will be played in Kolkata at the Eden Gardens.

The Kolkata match will be a clash of the table toppers. India with 14 points are at No. 1 while South Africa are second and have 12 points from the same number of matches.
