At 18 years and 193 days old, fast bowler Lucy Hamilton has become the youngest player to achieve a five-wicket haul in the
Women's Big Bash League
(WBBL). Playing for the
Brisbane Heat
against the Melbourne Stars on Sunday, Lucy accomplished this feat with impressive figures of 5-8.
The Melbourne Stars had a promising start after being put in to bat first. However, Lucy, who had not previously taken a wicket in the WBBL, turned the innings upside down.
In the fifth over, she made her mark by bowling wicketkeeper-batter Yastika Bhatia (8) and dismissing captain Annabel Sutherland (21) caught out in just three balls.
Returning in the ninth over, Lucy continued to show her bowling prowess. She had Meg Lanning (13) caught behind by wicketkeeper Georgia Redmayne. In the 11th over, she bowled Tess Flintoff (7).
Lucy completed her five-wicket haul in the 15th over with a slower delivery that trapped Deepti Sharma lbw, ending her spell with an impressive 5-8, including a maiden over.
Her accomplishment on Sunday surpasses the record set by West Indies captain Hayley Matthews. Matthews took 5-19 off 3.4 overs while playing for the Hobart Hurricanes in the 2017 WBBL at 18 years and 296 days old.
Lucy's 5-8 stands as the equal-second-best figures in the competition's history. These figures trail only senior Australia pacer Megan Schutt's 6-19. And it equalled leg-spinner Amanda-Jade Wellington's figures for the Adelaide Strikers in the 2021 WBBL.
Lucy's outstanding bowling played a crucial role in the Brisbane Heat's successful chase of 139 runs in 17.4 overs. They reached their target with six wickets and 15 balls to spare.
Indian batter Jemimah Rodrigues led the Heat's chase with a commanding 45 runs off 31 balls, hitting five fours and two sixes.
