Actor Eric Dane has revealed he has been diagnosed with
Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis
(ALS), a progressive neurodegenerative disease.
In a statement to People, the 52-year-old actor said, "I have been diagnosed with ALS." He went on to share, "I am grateful to have my loving family by my side as we navigate this next chapter."
Dane, best known for his roles in Grey's Anatomy and as Cal Jacobs on the hit drama series Euphoria, also said that he remains committed to his work. "I feel fortunate that I am able to continue working and am looking forward to returning to the set of Euphoria next week," he shared.
Filming for season 3 of the hit drama is currently underway. While his schedule is set to begin on April 14, actor-producer Zendaya was spotted on the sets last month, filming scenes with Alexa Demie.
The actor, who is married to actress Rebecca Gayheart and share two daughters, Billie Beatrice, and Georgia Geraldine, also requested for privacy during this time. In his statement, he added, "I kindly ask that you give my family and I privacy during this time.”
ALS has no known cure, and according to the Muscular Dystrophy Association, life expectancy following diagnosis is typically three to five years, though some individuals live much longer. Patients gradually lose their ability to speak, eat, walk, and breathe independently.
Dane now joins a list of public figures who have battled the condition, including Stephen Hawking, Aaron Lazar, John Driskell Hopkins, Eric Stevens, Joe Bonsall, Roberta Flack, Kenneth Mitchell, among others.
Fans have since taken to social media to express their support for the actor while commending his strength and also wishing him the best.
