Dilip Kumar loved Madhubala even after they broke-up, said the director as he slapped her with full force during a scene in 'Mughal-e-Azam'

Dilip Kumar and Saira Banu made the most gorgeous pair and their love continues to remain inspiring. However, did you know that the late legendary actor was deeply in love with Madhubala before he married Saira and he was also in a relationship with her. They started dating during the shoot of 'Tarana' and also wanted to get married. But Madhubala's father strongly opposed to their relationship. They broke up because of that but were shooting for '

' at that point in time. Despite the break-up, they continued to shoot with each other, now allowing their work to get affected.
After they broke up in real life, the duo shot for a scene where Dilip Kumar's character Salim had to slap Anarkali. Usually, such slaps for a scene are faked during the scene but Dilip Kumar did not fake it and slapped Madhubala for real with intensity. This incident was described in the book, "I Want To Live: The Story of Madhubala". It read that Dilip Kumar hit the actress with full force.
Director

K Asif

reacted to this incident and said, "I am very happy today for it is apparent he still loves you. Who but a man in love could have done something like this? It only proves he loved you and continues to love you, whatever you may think.”
In Dilip Kumar's biography, 'The Substance and The Shadow', Dilip Kumar had recalled how Madhubala had once visited him before she passed away. Reportedly, the actress had tried to reach out to him before her death. In this book, Dilip Kumar said, "When I went to Madhu’s home, I was pained to see that she was frail and looked very weak.” He further revealed how he remembers her. "Hamare shehzade ko unki shehzadi mil gayi hai, main bahut khush hoon!” (Our prince has got his princess, I am very happy)," he said.
Madhubala passed away very young, just at the age of 36 due to a heart condition.
