Several indigenous community members, including Devery, slammed the film's portrayal of Osage people.
Takin to her Twitter handle, Devery Jacobs, to expressed her disappointment with the excessive violence and one-dimensional depiction of the indigenous characters in the film. "I HAVE THOUGHTS. I HAVE STRONG FEELINGS. This film was painful, grueling, unrelenting, and unnecessarily graphic," She began.

Elaborating on her sentiments, she highlighted her Native heritage, Devery underlined the explicit portrayal of the atrocities throughout the movie, with only brief reprieves in the form of extensive 30-minute scenes where 'murderous white guys talk about/plan the killings.'
While she praised

's performance and called for the actress' Oscar win, she call out Scorsese's 'painfully underwritten' Osage characters. She said, "If you look proportionally, each of the Osage characters felt painfully underwritten, while the white men were given way more courtesy and depth."

The actress further said that the dead of the community weren't "shown honour or dignity." She adde, "I believe that by showing more murdered Native women on screen, it normalizes the violence committed against us and further dehumanizes our people."

Devery then emphasized that she would have rather seen the film from an Osage filmmaker's perspective. "This is the issue when non-Native directors are given the liberty to tell our stories; they center the white perspective and focus on Native people’s pain. For the Osage communities involved in creating this film; I can imagine how cathartic it is to have these stories and histories finally acknowledged, especially on such a prestigious platform like this film."
She also said that the film's closing shot of Ilonshka dances and drumming, "doesn’t absolve the film from painting Native folks as helpless victims without agency."
In addition to the movie itself, Devery took issue to its reception from filmgoers, many of whom have applauded Martin‘s screenplay.
She concluded, “All in all, after 100 years of the way Indigenous communities have been portrayed in film, is this really the representation we needed?”

Devery is not the only member of an indigenous tribe who has slammed the film. Several others have taken to social media to express the need for production houses to back films by indigenous people and promote stories from their perspective.
