The
Afghan minister for refugees
was killed on Wednesday in an explosion that took place at the ministry's offices in Kabul, according to a report from news agency AFP.
"Unfortunately an explosion happened at the ministry of refugees and minister
Khalil Ur-Rahman Haqqani
has been martyred along with some of his colleagues," said the official, who requested anonymity.
Khalil Ur-Rahman Haqqani was a sibling of
Jalaluddin Haqqani
, the founder of the notorious Haqqani network, which orchestrated some of the most brutal attacks during the Taliban's twenty-year insurgency.
He was the paternal uncle of the present interior minister, Sirajuddin Haqqani.
Since the Taliban assumed control of Afghanistan in 2021, concluding their conflict with US and Nato-led foreign forces, the level of violence has decreased.
However,
Islamic State Khorasan
, the regional branch of Islamic State, remains operational in Afghanistan and continues to conduct gun and bomb attacks targeting civilians, foreigners and Taliban officials.
